From September 2020, Relationships Education became compulsory for all pupils receiving primary education. The Department for Education (DfE) defines Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) as:
“Lifelong learning about physical, moral, and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the importance of marriage and family life, stable and loving relationships, respect, love, and care.”
At St Neot School, our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) and RSE curriculum supports each child, providing a safe space to explore their own identity, relationships, and the wider world.
PSHE and RSE offer regular opportunities for children to express their opinions, ask questions, and engage in open discussion, all of which contribute to personal development. The curriculum also helps children to appreciate the diversity of the communities in which they live, supporting their spiritual, moral, social, and cultural growth.
Our aim is to provide children with the knowledge and skills to make positive decisions about their health and wellbeing. Pupils are encouraged to recognise issues as they arise and to seek support from appropriate sources. Overall, the curriculum promotes positive physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing, laying a foundation that will benefit children now and as they grow and mature.
PSHE is taught using the Jigsaw Scheme of Work, which aligns with DfE statutory and recommended guidance (September 2020). Jigsaw covers three core learning themes: health and wellbeing, relationships, and living in the wider world, and places a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience, and nurturing mental and physical health.
The programme incorporates statutory Relationships and Sex Education and Health Education and is designed progressively so that children build on their knowledge, understanding, and skills each year. All classes study six half-termly units, which together provide a complete and coherent programme. These units are:
1. Being Me in My World – understanding my place in the class, school, and global community
2. Celebrating Difference – exploring diversity and anti-bullying
3. Dreams and Goals – setting personal and collective aspirations, goal setting, and teamwork
4. Healthy Me – covering self-esteem, confidence, healthy lifestyle choices, and age-appropriate awareness of drugs and alcohol
5. Relationships – understanding friendships, family and other relationships, conflict resolution, and communication skills
6. Changing Me – sex and relationships education in the context of coping positively with change
